This is possible to do, however, will be tricky and I'm not a huge fan of VTX (Vote To X) on any game server I've been on. There is various reasons to this and one of the biggest reasons is that you will get people that have a small issue and others afk. Say you have a network issue (not TPS) and you repeatedly do a VTX for the restart of the MC server a few times it could get messy for others who are going idle and then it's being issued for what ever reason. There's also the possibility for an upset or malicious user to abuse this as well.Proposed voting system so that if more than half of the voting players after 1-2 minutes vote to restart the server, there's a restart.
It was the other day in the mumble server, Riv and I were discussing these things with you and you mentioned that at this time you didn't want anyone else watching over the server. But you didn't mention you were looking into getting another staff member that I recall, and nothing was mentioned that you were looking into moving the server. So this is new to me.Could I get a quote on that?
Anyway, I have been looking into an extra staff-member but I'm currently stalling that process a tad as I'm considering moving the server to a new box.
I never stated that I did not want another staff member, I even told you that we always used to have more admins - and I also wanted one but currently had more things on my mind.-snip-
The plan is simply to exist and as I've told and been quoted on before, we're not going anywhere. But what would be better to avoid the confusion is maybe come out with something here in the forums to let us all know what your plans are for short/long term.
Off Topic: LONG LIVE ANMEBRA!The plan is simply to exist and as I've told and been quoted on before, we're not going anywhere.
A change of box is nothing that will effect the content of the game/world - the content is decided by the community.
E.g. @Morbid Sally's post regarding a possible reset - which is a community-initialized and rather big topic for discussion.
As I'm awfully torn between the two decisions and therefore I have decided not to respond at all.
There's absolutely no point for me to reply "I have no idea what I fucking want as I want them two equally much.".
Simply put, the long and short term goals are to be Anembra.
I agree. The main reason I suggested a VTX method was in attempt to prevent players from constantly cycling the server, but I think that you're right in that there are probably better ways to implement this change. My [next] most immediate suggestion would be to impose a strict 12 hour timer (so if the server has run less than 12 hours, a restart wouldn't be possible).... and I'm not a huge fan of VTX (Vote To X) on any game server I've been on.
I had thought of the option of asking for the mods to do it but that still brings us back to my concern with that type of command in general:Another (potentially more effective solution) would be instead of giving everyone the power to vote a restart, we nix the voting idea and give the power to the Moderators. All of the mods on Anembra possess apt common sense to give things a nudge when (and only when) the server needs to be nudged. @Fayettemat is probably the most knowledgable of the mods as far as technical aspects go, and from what I gather, he's nearly always listening, be it in-game or through IRC.
My two cents.
As such what do you guys suggest we do in the event that shit hits the fan and the admins are not around? I *think* that more people would rather deal with 16-18TPS then to have a downed server. That being said when it drops below 16 you start to get a ton of noticeable lag in almost every way and it's really hard to play. The Minecraft server we use does have a restart command that can be used (by OPs) but it can bug and what would we do then?
