Noob Questions

What a beautiful world you have started! I feel lucky to be able to contribute to it. :)

By now some of my fellow players may have noticed I have a lot of noob questions. I really appreciate all the help everyone has given me in chat...thank you for that.

But I hate to interrupt what others are doing with my need for info, so I thought I'd post some questions I have at this point here, so someone can answer them when it's convenient. :)

Forum Registration- I registered under GamerMom but then realized I should have used my Mojang account name, TwinnieMom. Should I change my forum registration? P.S. I'd like to add that I let my kids pick my screen names. And that makes 'em happy. They are amazing up-and-coming players...watch for them here in a few years when they are of age. ;-)

Building- I have a couple of questions about this:

1. I think I would like to build a cottage in the woods along the train line. What I am not clear on is: Do I have to choose between a wilderness area/claim and a town plot, or can I have both?

2. If building a cabin in the woods, is it ok to clear trees from a small area? (Not talking deforestation here!) Or do I have to find an already clear area if I want space around my structure?

3. Is it ok to have a small garden/livestock pens around my main world house? This may seem like a stupid question, but I just want to be absolutely clear about where I can take stuff from and place stuff.

4. Can I harvest trees/flowers in the main world if I plant them myself with saplings or bone meal?

5. I'm not really clear on how to claim a wilderness area. Do I need to select individual blocks, or the corners of the area, or...?

I apologize if I have missed the answers to these questions elsewhere. Also for any frustration that may arise from trying to answer what must seem like simple and obvious points. I'm getting fairly competent at MC but servers are all new to me and this is the first one I have joined that is actually run like a community rather than a free-for-all, so I want to be sure I am treating our world with respect and not interfering with the work others have done!

On behalf of myself and all noobs, I thank you most sincerely in advance for your efforts to help me. I hope this thread will help others who are on the same learning curve as I am as well. :)

Ask away, there should hopefully be a member of the staff online to answer your questions online as well - also you'll find that most players are patient and do not mind questions being asked.
If they do, they usually just turn to the silent treatment. ;)

The forum name is completely up to you, we've had people registering with their real names.
While this might cause confusion, it's up to the account holder to deal with all the "who are you" questions!
While "GamerMom" and "GamerTwinnie" are fairly alike - I don't think confusion will be a matter here.
If you on the other hand do wish to change your forum-name, I can sort that out for you.

1. I think I would like to build a cottage in the woods along the train line. What I am not clear on is: Do I have to choose between a wilderness area/claim and a town plot, or can I have both?
Basically, the wilderness is a not-yet claimed area. So unless joining a town, you'd have to start out in the wilderness.
After acquiring 30 gold you'll be able to create your own little settlement, giving you perks such as instantaneous teleports and complete monster protection (purged every few seconds in your claimed area).

2. If building a cabin in the woods, is it ok to clear trees from a small area? (Not talking deforestation here!) Or do I have to find an already clear area if I want space around my structure?
If you find a nice area, it's completely yours and yours to build whatever you like.
All we wish for is that people don't harvest more land than actually needed. If you have plans for 100x100 blocks for example, no-one will think anything of it if you happen to have harvested 150x150.
Having a shed on the other hand and harvest a kilometer radius might get heavily frowned upon. ;)

3. Is it ok to have a small garden/livestock pens around my main world house? This may seem like a stupid question, but I just want to be absolutely clear about where I can take stuff from and place stuff.
As stated earlier, any land found by you (that isn't in a close vicinity to other players unless asked) is yours to do as you please.

4. Can I harvest trees/flowers in the main world if I plant them myself with saplings or bone meal?
Of course, harvesting flowers is nothing we actively control. Least to say, no player yet has received warnings for harvesting too many flowers!

5. I'm not really clear on how to claim a wilderness area. Do I need to select individual blocks, or the corners of the area, or...?
A tutorial covering this will be written and posted in a near future, the general idea though is;
The whole world is divided in predefined 16x16 "chunks", from bedrock to sky.
Using /p toggle plotborder will show you small smoke-puffs of those predefined areas.
Using /town new <name> will create a new settlement with you as a mayor (priced at 30 gold ingots), inside one of those chunks.
Entering that area will prompt the settlements name in the chat for you to see, expand the area by stepping outside the already claimed chunk and typing /town claim. Each claim is an additional 1 gold.
A total of 16 chunks can be claimed per player in the town. Invite more players (maybe that hubby you were talking about?) and you'll be able to expand more.

No need to apologize, since the forum and community is recently revived a lot of stuff is missing.
Also, there's always someone around here willing to help you out.
I hope my answers were sufficient, don't hesitate to PM/make a post/hit me up ingame for any further questions.

Thank you Kapten_Knas, for your FANTASTIC and thoughtful reply! :) You covered everything I was wondering about and I feel much more confident about going ahead with my plans for world domination, er I mean a modest little cottage settlement shortly!

Hubby says thank you for the mention and he is seriously considering accepting the invitation. He is even more shy and reclusive than me (artists) so this may be just the right kinda server for him...so friendly and respectful and of course lots of fun. :) He has made some progress on the village we are building in our family LAN world...I will see if I have a screenshot. You know us moms, always posting pics of our family's achievements lol.

See you soon!

I think that is the coolest thing in the world Gamer, a family of minecraft players. I wish my parents and other family members would play xD but sadly I'm the only one who does. I look forward to seeing what great achievements you have to bring to the server :)
