about 1.14...

It adds a lot of stuff and changes the vanilla textures a bit. But more importantly, the terrain generation isn't radically different from previous versions. I tested as far back as 1.9.4, and for the most part everything is the same with the exception of surface details such as trees. Given that most towns are going to have altered land as a matter of course, I think it would be worthwhile to make a new world with the old world's seed and transfer our towns over to it. Any differences in elevation should be easy to fix with a little hands-on terraforming done by players. Of course, this is all dependent on which version the current main world was made in.

Also, automating the mining world regen would be nice too ;)

I think that transferring some of the main builds onto a newly regenerated seed of the current map, like J10 said, would be a great idea! I personally spent a lot of time working on my base and would be sad to see it go given that I have so many ideas I still want to build on it. My town isn't very big, it's limited to an island so I don't think porting it over to the same spot would be an issue.

I'd rather not see a full map reset, I would probably leave if that were to happen. I've worked too long on my base to see it dusted again.

Good news, everyone! I've found some compelling evidence that shows a transfer would be totally feasible: check the southeast corner of the livemap http://mc.anembra.com:8123/ and you'll notice something odd.

Specifically:
chunky.png

See the parts with a darker shade of blue? That's "new" (1.13) ocean. It extends from shore into deep water. And those icebergs are there because the server either forgot or never loaded those chunks, so it remade them in the "current" version. Also notice the missing chunks to the left, in the desert. I'd wager the server would regen those seamlessly, possibly adding 1.13-type stuff.

The only catch I can think of is that some of our towns might end up in the middle of previously-unimplemented features such as villages (illages?) or shipwrecks or whatever. That might look weird but should be easy to deal with. Easier than starting over, for sure.

I'm so down for this, I think this is the best solution to the current issue since the overwhwhelming area on the map goes unused and is unbuilt on!

Ahoy there lads!
Sorry about the absence. :)

I'm with Fronts regarding the full map reset, that's nothing I'd want to see either.
Copying and pasting items over to a map with the same seed is doable per se - the thing is that it's very time-consuming.
At the current time I'm swamped IRL and there's no quick and easy way to make it a community effort either...

There may be a simpler way: deleting the chunks that aren't developed/occupied/built on/towny'd
That way, when someone gets near, the server will make the chunk and have it be the version we're running instead of the old stuff.

The downside is that the livemap would be mostly dark as a result.

This would be a great solution! However, I'm currently limited by how many Towny blocks I can claim, I'm just localized to an island but I haven't been able to claim it all

There's got to be a way to survey the map for blocks added/removed/altered by players. With that info, it's a matter of mapping them to chunks and seeing what's left untouched.

Would CoreProtect have a function like that?

After some further reading it seems there is a plugin that can assist with this, though it seems very resource-intensive.
There's a scheduled server upgrade in about a month and I'll implement the plugin at the same time.

It has hooks for Towny which keeps it's chunks regardless of last visited which will be very useful.
In addition to these changes I'm planning on removing the economy support- simply because it's not really needed and shops could be made with item exchange instead of a virtual currency.
With that, Towny towns will never deplete or disappear.

Regarding your last comment knas, if money is disappearing, is it possible to still expand our cities? I believe it costs money to expand.

It does cost money to expand, however getting money in the server is fixed. Both killing mobs and mining give you money. On mining expeditions, I have been able to earn close to $5000 in game currency. Additionally, it seems knas has increased the amount of plots we can purchase up to 1000, so It's been feasable to expand towns so far now. I have been slowly claiming my island in preparation for the new map regen

Hey, I just wanted to check in and ask if the regen plugin was ever implemented? I noticed some new wonderful biome changes at the center of the map but have not seen any changes to my surrounding area.
